This book aims to provide basic information about the wild birds naturally occurring in the islands of Cebu and Bohol. The main goal of the authors is to drum up interest in the thriving wild birds in our locality. We would like the contents of this publication to be appreciated by ordinary people in as much as ornithologist or biologist would.

The birds presented in the book are representative of both the most common species often seen in your backyards and rarely observed species not only in Cebu and Bohol but throughout the country. We tried to cover as much as possible the habitat profiles present in Cebu and Bohol islands. These include shores, coastal areas, inland waters, urban settlements, grasslands, agricultural areas to secondary and primary forests.

These habitats are generally under pressure from natural and man-made activities. Some are transformed at an alarming rate which may not give wildlife species a chance to sustain a viable population. There are several contributory factors in the changing environments. However, the conversion of habitats to agriculture and/or settlements are the most prevalent.

These are the realities that local residents and visitors have to face. The line between wildlife habitats and the place we live or work are blurring. Some birds can adapt well while the others may not be able to survive without interventions. As we expand settlements. The more we understand and learn about their ecology, the better we are at protecting, developing sustainable and viable habitats.

After more than a decade of observing wild birds in the locality, we feel that there are still a lot to learn. The data presented in the book is far from complete and therefore needs to be updated as more data are gathered, deduced and shared.

Finally, the authors fervently hope that when people are drawn outdoors, they will discover far more than birds. The environment that support these wildlife is actually not far from home which should lead to the realization that is not really all about birds..it is more about how we take care of ourselves and the next generation.
