Born on February 27, 1970, the youngest of four children of Antonio and Visitation Fernando. He studied at Claret High School, then went to Ateneo de Manila University where he graduated with a Development Studies degree.
On October 17, 1996, Sarom, one of Richie’s students, came to school for a meeting. Angered, Sarom took a hand-grenade from his bag, and was about to throw it into a classroom full of defenseless, handicapped students. Richie grabbed Sarom, but Sarom struggled, and accidentally dropped the grenade. It exploded, killing Richie. Everybody else in the classroom was unharmed, even Sarom. At just 26 years of age, Richie had given his life to save his students. He had died for the people he loved.
